The QUIETLOUD retreat

A few days in the same place can change how we make music together

QUIETLOUD brings a small group of electronic music artists into a residential setting where sessions, shared meals, rest and the unscheduled hours all have a place.

Why we gather

We want to hear what happens when artists have time to get past the introductions

At the start of a retreat there are names, influences and the usual questions about what everyone makes. A few days later, people have heard each other think aloud, work through a difficult idea and change their minds. That is where a more interesting exchange can begin.

We give the group a gentle structure, with room for working sessions, listening and sharing skills. The time between those moments matters just as much. A conversation over breakfast might carry on into the studio, or somebody might need an afternoon to themselves before joining the room again.

The shape of the days

A rhythm made for the people living it

1

Arrive with something

A sketch, a question, a way of listening or a skill you would like to share gives us a place to begin. Nobody needs a finished project to take part.

2

Work beside each other

There is time to make music, hear unfinished work and find out how somebody else approaches a problem. Sessions can grow from the group’s interests rather than a fixed programme.

3

Let the rest of life in

Meals, walks and quiet hours help people settle into a shared place. Rest is part of making the retreat worthwhile, and everyone should be able to step away when they need to.

Get involved

When the next retreat takes shape, we will share the details with people who have written to us

Dates and location will be announced once they are confirmed. If you would like to take part, tell us about your practice and what you are curious to explore with others.
