Why QUIETLOUD exists

The best conversations in music kept ending too soon

We know the feeling of meeting someone whose work opens a door, then having to leave before either of you has had the chance to walk through it. QUIETLOUD began with a wish for more time together.

Our approach

The room changes what people feel able to share

Electronic music is often made in isolation and heard in public. Between those two moments there is a whole creative life: rough versions, doubts, discoveries and ways of working that rarely make it into a conversation at a show.

We bring artists together in a smaller setting, where they can show each other work in progress and spend enough time together for a useful exchange to develop. The retreat should feel generous and alive, with room for both concentration and the ordinary pleasures of sharing a place.

How we work

The things we try to make room for, every time we gather

1

Curate with care

We think about the mix of practices and personalities, and speak openly about what people hope to bring into the room.

2

Make participation generous

People share knowledge in different ways. Listening closely, offering a useful thought or showing somebody a process can all move the work forward.

3

Leave room for rest

Good work can need long stretches of attention, but it also needs meals, fresh air and a chance to step away without explanation.

4

Respect the work and the person

We make agreements about privacy, consent, feedback and documentation so people can choose what they share and how it travels beyond the retreat.

A living project

We are learning from each gathering and changing the format with the people who take part

The shape of QUIETLOUD will keep evolving. We want to stay close to what actually happens in the room and let that guide the next retreat.
